On Saturday March 7th, St. John’s Seminary in Brighton will host a Fr. Dan Kennedy Scholarship Dinner in honor of Fr. Dan Kennedy.
As of this posting (Sunday 1/18) there are only 200 seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Serra Club of Boston already has a table of eight reserved and is working on getting a second table together. The cost is $100 per ticket ($50 for priests) and all proceeds go to the scholarship fund at the seminary.
Please contact Loretta Gallagher at information@serraboston.org for more information. We hope to see you there!

Serra Boston has posted the Fishers of Men DVD to Vimeo.
The Bishops’ Committee on Vocations created this DVD as part of a larger program to actively invite men to consider a vocation to the priesthood. This program, entitled Priestly Life and Vocations Summit: Fishers of Men, is a presbyteral workshop which utilizes the appreciative inquiry method of asking priests about their most positive experiences in the priesthood.

Our next meeting will be this Saturday, January 17th. We will meet at St. Mary’s at 133 School St in Waltham, MA (click here for directions).
On the 17th, our Mass will be said in memory of Fr. Dan Kennedy, whose 35th birthday would have been the day before (Jan. 16th.) Fr. Mike Harrington will be the celebrant and our guest speaker, as our chaplain Fr. Dan Hennessey will be out of state on that day.
God-willing, the weather will cooperate and we can meet after two months of snowy winter. We hope to see you there!

Based on the forecast for Friday, we thought it prudent to cancel the monthly Serra meeting for December.
The weathermen have now upped the snow accumulation totals for Friday and are saying we could get up to a foot. The storm is supposed to wind down “early in the morning” on Saturday, but that means a lot of shoveling to get out of those driveways!
So let’s all stay safe and warm in our homes on Saturday morning and pray for one another. Hopefully we can gather on the 3rd Saturday of the New Year of grace: January 17th.
See you then, God-willing! A Blessed Christmas to you all.

The Boston Globe reports on an increase in enrollment at St. John’s Seminary:
Enrollment at St. John’s Seminary has doubled over the last two years, a stunning turnabout for an institution that seemed to be spiraling toward closure in the wake of the clergy sexual abuse crisis.
The stone hall in Brighton, where two generations ago hundreds of young men prepared for the priesthood, is still strikingly quiet, but the pews of the Romanesque chapel are now about one-third full, as fresh-faced young men from around the world help to revive a 125-year-old institution that teetered on the brink of extinction just a few years ago.
The article discusses several strategic decisions made by Cardinal Sean O’Malley to improve the image of the seminary.
